Additional Documents From Chassidic Town of Dokshitsy Discovered

Following an incredible find of documents from Synagogue elections from the Shtetle of Dokshitsy (Dokshitz) earlier this year, another set of documents outlining an election at a Chassidic Shul has surfaced. Many of the names in the documents might be familiar.

The document came from the Lyadskaya Shul in Dokshytsy. The Shul named from shtetl Lyady, held an election on March 31st, 1906 for the position of Rabbi, Gabai, and Treasurer.

In this election, the following Board members were elected: Rabbi – Sholom son of Zundel Dreizenshtok, 60, Councilor (gabai)- Shmuilo son of Elya Freedman, 55, Treasurer – Leizer son of Zelik Shkolnik, 40.

The document also lists those who participated in the elections;

Anshel son of Girsha Markman, Sh.I. Izakson, Abram Kaminkovich, Ovsey son of Shimen Meerson, Groynim Freedman, Iosel son of Ovsey Kazinetz, Abram son of Anshel Mirkin, Ya. Pliskin, Vulf Freedman, Berka Berzon, Meir son of Khaim Kaplun, Itzko Sisman, I.M. Freedman, Girsha Levitan, Berka Varfman, Elya Freedman, Abram Kagan, Zalman-Srul Kremer, A.Feigin, L.Z. Shkolnik, Shmuila Freedman, Movsha son of Meir Katzovich, Zelik Shkolnik, Shlioma son of Mordukh Kazarnovsky, Iser Kamenkovich, Shaya Korob…., Leiba Solovei.

Dokshitsy, a small city in the Vitebsk region of Belarus, was mostly Jewish prior to World War II, with a majority of its 3600 residents being Jewish in 1939.

Tragically, during World War II, the Nazis killed more than 2500 people in the Dokshitsy ghetto, and the Jewish community was nearly completely decimated.
