As Hope For Survivors Fades, Florida Building Collapse Work Shifts to Recovery Operation

The search at the site of a collapsed Florida condo building has switched to a recovery operation, signaling an end to attempts to find survivors — as the death toll grew to 54 Wednesday evening.

The grim announcement comes two weeks after the disaster in Surfside.

“Our top priority throughout this entire operation since day one has been to do everything possible, everything humanly possible, and to explore every single portion of the collapse grid in search of survivors,” Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said at an evening briefing.
