Camp Bullowa Gets Second Life As Scouts Decide Not to Sell

Camp Bullowa, the Boys Scout campground located in Rockland County, got a second life as the scouts decided not to sell the massive campground.

“Today, the Board of the Greater Hudson Valley Council made the difficult decision to sell Camp Nooteeming,” the scouts published in a bankruptcy update. “This was a heart-wrenching decision, but necessary to ensure that Scouting in the Hudson/Delaware Valleys will grow and have a sustainable, bright future.”

The decision to sell Camp Nooteeming saved camp Bullowa, and was according to the scouts a tactical decision.

“The bankruptcy taskforce has spent the last several months analyzing multiple scenarios to raise the funds needed to pay the Council’s multi-million dollar obligation to the Victims Compensation Trust,” they wrote. “Three of the Council’s properties were placed on the market earlier this year to access each property’s values. The market information gathered along with analyzing past budgets, endowment reports, and future expenses lead the bankruptcy taskforce to recommend the plan that was approved today.”

The decision was lauded by County Executive Ed Day.

“I am extremely pleased to learn of the Greater Hudson Valley Council (GHVC) Board’s decision not to sell Camp Bullowa in the Town of Stony Point,” he wrote. “This decision by GHVC is a victory for Rockland’s Scouting program and the other organizations which regularly utilize Camp Bullowa. I want to acknowledge the leadership and herculean efforts undertaken to save this property by Stony Point Town Supervisor Jim Monaghan and the Stony Point Town Board. The advocacy of County Legislator Doug Jobson, NYS Senator James Skoufis, NYS Assemblyman Colin Schmitt and the Supervisors of Rockland’s four other towns no doubt played a role in this decision as well.”
