Confirmed: Minyanim Allowed in Rockland County, With Restrictions

In perhaps the most important move back to normalcy to date, Rockland County Health has confirmed that Minyanim would again be allowed, with certain limitations.

The news was clarified by Rabbi Yisroel Kahan, liaison to the Good Samaritan and Westchester Medical Hospitals. “For those asking about Minyanim, Current @RocklandGov @RockHealth order, limits gatherings to no more than 10 people,” he wrote on twitter. He also reminded community members that “Per @NYGovCuomo Executive Order, a mask is required in public, if you cannot maintain #SocialDistancing.”

Minyanim have been a point of contention in Jewish communities worldwide, as many Rabbi’s have forbade them, yet many continued to make rogue prayer groups.

The limitations set by the Rockland County government in their latest order regarding gatherings, whether indoors or out, is the maximum of ten people at the gathering, just enough for a minyon of Jewish men. Another requirement is the need to maintain social distancing at a minimum of 6 feet between those gathered.

The order, dated April 30th, discourages these gatherings despite making them technically legal.

Flouting this order comes with fines of up to $2000 per day, and the possibility of criminal prosecution.
