A proposed budget that was sent to voting booths on Tuesday has passed with 60.7% of the vote, and has set in motion a tax increase.
The votes main opposition had argued that the tax brought no benefit to the Orthodox Jewish community, and escalated an already strained financial situation.
Others supported the budget on a more basic premise, that public schools must get adequate funding regardless of the Jewish community’s involvement.
Voting booths had opened across the lower Hudson valley, and had passed in nearly every district with the exclusion of one.
