Following Fire In Girls School In Spring Valley, Hero’s Across The Street Get A Thank You
by Monsey.info
Just minutes after the news broke on social media that the Yeshiva of Spring Valley for Girls School had a fire and was being evacuated, the rumor mill kicked in.
A malicious rumor began spreading that the public school immediately across the street had denied entry to the freezing girls over a lack of masks. The rumor could not have been further from the truth.
Within moments of the fire being identified at the yeshiva, Grandview Elementary School Principal Smith rushed to find her building’s custodian, Kevin Holland, according to a report from the East Ramapo Central School District.
Holland is not new to what to do in an emergency, as he is the Fire Chief in his hometown of Circleville, New York, in Orange County.
As Smith called 911, Holland rushed across the street to help in the evacuation of the Yeshiva building.
“I was so impressed with Kevin’s immediate impulse to spring into action and help the students to safety,” said Principal Smith. “I am grateful he was here to help us through this ordeal.”
Unlike what the rumors said, the hundreds of students and staff evacuated from the school building found a welcome stop at Grandview Elementary School, where many of the girls waited until they were evacuated to further locations.
“This is one of the marvelous things about the teachers and staff across the East Ramapo Central School District community – the natural instinct to do good,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Clarence Ellis. “We recognize Mr. Holland for his bravery and compassionate intuition and Principal Smith for her strong leadership.”
As a well-deserved thank you, staff from the Yeshiva made a visit to Grandview Tuesday morning, showing their appreciation for the assistance the school provided.
A special “Thank You” poster decorated by the Yeshiva’s students was only one of the many gifts and tokens of appreciation sent by the school throughout the day.
