Hillel of Rockland presents “An Evening of Chazanus”

Fans of Jewish traditional, holiday, and liturgical music – known as “Chazanus” (or Chazanut), are excited about the groundbreaking lineup of Chazonim (cantors) in store for a concert in Rockland on September 19, the first such concert ever to take place in Rockland.

“An Evening of Chazanus” will feature renowned Cantors Netanel Hershtik, Benzion Miller, Chaim David Berson, Aryeh Leib Hurwitz, Yossi Pomerantz, Yoel Menachem Kohn, and Naftali Marrus, with Cantor Daniel Gildar serving as piano accompanist and musical director. The program includes soul-stirring selections in Hebrew, Yiddish, and English.

“I am really looking forward to performing with my colleagues in Rockland for the first time,” said Cantor Hershtik, scion of an acclaimed cantorial family. He is known for preserving the authenticity of older music while giving it new arrangements. Renowned chazan Benzion Miller, the “elder statesman” of the group, who was born in 1947 in a DP camp, was privileged to be among the first group of cantors to perform in Eastern Europe after WWII.

The event benefits Hillel of Rockland, based at Rockland Community College under the direction of Rabbi Dov and Shevy Oliver. Hillel offers Jewish students of all backgrounds a welcoming and positive environment to interact and enjoy their heritage.
