Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant To Close Second Reactor
by Monsey.info
As federal regulators consider the owner’s proposal to sell it to a company that plans to demolish it, the Indian Point Nuclear Energy Center will be shutting down its second reactor.
The planned closure of the Unit 2 reactor is set to take place on Thursday, May 30th in a deal between the present owner, Entergy Corp., the State of New York, and the environmental group Riverkeeper.
Despite the plant providing nearly a quarter of New York City’s energy, Entergy Corp doesn’t believe that the closure will cause any shortages. The company points to lower cost natural gas, and more efficiency for the surplus needed to cover the closure.
The Unit 3 reactor at the plant is set for closure in April of 2021, with the plant to be demolished entirely by the end of 2033.
