An intoxicated driver led police on a merry chase early Wednesday morning, ending after he was chased down, then promptly released due to bail reform laws.

“At approximately 3:15am, one of our midnight sergeants attempted to stop a vehicle for a traffic violation in the New Hempstead area of the town,” the Ramapo Police Department wrote. “The vehicle operator refused to stop his vehicle. Other police units responded to assist and were able to get the vehicle to stop.”

The driver, a 27 year old Spring Valley man, fled on foot before being chased down. As the officers attempted to handcuff the defendant, he resisted arrest and struggled with the officers.

One officer deployed his taser and the defendant was taken into custody.

He was charged with Driving While Intoxicated, Refusal to Take a Breath Test, Obstructing Governmental Administration 2nd degree, Resisting Arrest & several traffic violations.

He was arraigned and released without bail. He was advised to come to court on a future date.
