Jewish volunteers at the Spring Valley Ambulance Company received recognition this week after their quick action saved a woman’s life.
On Sunday night, Spring Hill Ambulance, along with Medic 25 and Town of Ramapo Police Department responded to a call for help in the Village of New Hempstead for a 24-year old woman who was having difficulty breathing.
The situation deteriorated quickly and the woman’s breathing stopped completely.
Following the instructions of the 911 dispatcher, a family member began CPR as rescue services rushed to the home.
Ramapo Police Officer Grant arrived on scene about two minutes later and took over CPR until the Spring Hill Ambulance members arrived on scene. The Jewish EMS members continued life-saving interventions, and quick-thinking EMT Hershel Glick recognized that the patient exhibited signs of an opioid overdose.
After confirming with the family that the patient had accidentally taken too much of her prescribed painkiller medication, the volunteers administered Narcan, returning the woman to consciousness within 10 minutes of the initial call.
The commendation to the volunteers was posted to the Ramapo Police Depar
