Missing Man Found After Jogger Hears Screams Near The Nyack Beach Trail

A shortstopping story unfolded in Nyack Tuesday night, which ended well thanks to an alert jogger who heard a person screaming, and reported it to the police.

On Tuesday, November 08, 2022 at approximately 4:45pm a Clarkstown Police patrol officers responded to a home in Upper Nyack for a report of a man who went missing.

According to police, the wife of the missing man stated that her husband had left their home earlier in the day on foot and had not heard from him since. The woman told officers that her husband frequently takes walks in the Nyack beach area, and an exhaustive search began. Patrol officers, CPD K9 and the Clarkstown Drone Unit began searching the surrounding neighborhood, Nyack State Beach and Hook Mtn, which ended wihout success.

The tip that saved the man’s life came in the next morning.

At approximately 8:10am on Wednesday, November 9th, CPD received a call from the NYS Park Rangers stating that a jogger had heard a man yelling for help in a heavily wooded area along the Nyack Beach trail. Officers arrived on scene and spoke with the jogger who directed them to the area where she last heard the yelling.

Several units began canvassing along with Rockland Paramedics, where medics located the injured male in steep, rough terrain. The male was identified as Mandeep Tiwana, the missing male from the previous day.

The location where he was found allowed for him to only be rescued utilizing the Nyack Fire Department High Angle Rescue Team. Once located and reached, he was placed in a stokes basket by rescuers and raised up to a hiking trail above, where Rockland Medics and Nyack Ambulance transported him to Montefiore Nyack Hospital with non life threatening injuries.

The rescue efforts took approximately two hours from when his screams for help were first heard.
