Utility scams have been around for a while, but they’re becoming more rampant than ever. Know how to spot scammers and how to protect yourself against them.

The Scam
Someone calls and threatens to turn off your electricity or gas within an hour.

How to Respond
Hang up. We would never make threats to shut off your electricity or gas.

The Scam
Someone knocks on your door claiming they work for O&R.

How to Respond
Ask for their ID badge, which should include their name, photo, and employee number. If you’re unsure, call us at 1-877-434-4100 for verification.

The Scam
Someone demands payment with a prepaid gift card, cryptocurrency, wire transfer or purchasing app.

How to Respond
We never accept payment through these methods. Don’t provide any payment information and hang up. Instead, make your payment online at oru.com or through your bank, download the O&R mobile app, call us at 1-877-434-4100 or send us payment through the mail.

Someone asks you for money for new meters.

How to Respond
That’s bogus. We don’t charge our customers for meters.

The Scam
You get a suspicious email from O&R.

How to Respond
Don’t click on any links and contact us at 1-877-434-4100 to see if we sent that email.
