Planning To Rent Out Space As an Airbnb in Haverstraw? That’s Now Regulated

by Monsey.info

If you were thinking to make a little extra cash by renting out a room in your Haverstraw home as an Airbnb, you might now need to think twice.

The Village Board along with Village Attorney Jay Hood Jr. decided it was time to codify the operation of this type of business in the Village, terming them “Short Term Rentals”, and requiring them to be registered with the Town.

According to the Rockland County Times, the reason behind the move was “to facilitate the enforcement of New York Building and Fire Codes as well as the Village Code of Haverstraw in order to protect the public health, safety and welfare of the people of the Village of Haverstraw and to achieve the following beneficial purposes: The protection of the character and stability of residential areas. The correction and prevention of housing conditions/violations that adversely affect or are likely to adversely affect the life, safety, general welfare and health, including the physical, mental and social well-being of persons occupying dwellings; and the preservation of the value of land and buildings throughout the Village of Haverstraw.”

The registration wouldn’t be free, costing $150 on first time registration, and $100 on annual renewal.

The registry would also permit the town to regulate usage, such as parking, noise and length of rental stay. Infractions could be punished with fines from the town.
