Ramapo Police Reports Skimmer Found in Airmont Walmart

The Ramapo Police Department updated on a previous report of a skimmer found at a local store, stating that the store in question was at the Walmart in Airmont.

“Although this is still an ongoing investigation, the incident occurred at the Walmart located in Airmont, NY,” the Department wrote on Facebook. “The device was discovered on January 31, 2023.”

Skimmers are illegal card readers attached to payment terminals. These card readers grab data off a credit or debit card’s magnetic stripe without your knowledge, stealing the information and allowing criminals to sell the stolen data or use it to buy things online. You may not know your information has been stolen until you get your statement or an overdraft notice.

In the Department’s original report, the name of the store was left out, likely as the investigation was ongoing.

As for whose cards may have been compromised, the department wrote “It is unknown at this time when the device was placed on the register. Anyone who used the self-checkout register at Walmart is encouraged to check their accounts for suspicious activity.”
