Rockland $750 Million Budget Passes Legislators, Includes $40 Property Tax Hike
Rockland legislators provided themselves, the county executive and other elected officials with hefty raises by adopting a nearly $730 million budget that raises county property taxes by nearly $40 in 2020 for the average county property owner.
The budget passed 15-2.
Rockland Budget Changes
-The 17 legislators will see a $16,913 increase to $49,500 for their part-time positions.
-The county executive’s salary would jump $29,940 to $184,500.
-The county sheriff would see a $37,333 pay hike to $180,000. Sheriff Louis Falco unsuccessfully sought a $67,000 raise to put his pay closer to the county’s police chiefs.
-The county clerk’s pay would jump $13,850 to $152,500.
-The Legislature chair would be paid $61,500, with stipends atop of salary of $6,000 for the vice chair; $8,000 for the majority leader and minority leader, $3,000 for the deputy majority and minority leaders. The Budget and Finance Committee chair would get a $4,000 bump in pay. The minority leader first sought a $10,000 stipend, but the lawmakers rejected that amount.
-Added two more assistant district attorneys and a paralegal at a cost of $270,175. The money came from the county’s contingency fund.
-Added a Health Department clerk at $36,000 after abolishing a $50,000 job.
