Forty volunteers of Chaveirim of Rockland received training in active shooter situations in a special class given by the Ramapo Police Department.
Sargent Blain Howell and Officer Robert Navarro gave the Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events training course to the volunteers, which covers topics including emergency first aid, and preparedness. In such a dangerous situation, something as simple as applying direct pressure to severely bleeding wounds can save lives.
Also discussed in the course were tips on stopping an active shooter, in which the officers pointed out, one can legally do whatever is necessary. They highlighted the need to go for the shooter’s weapon, and reminded that they should be on the lookout for the possibility of a secondary device, such as a bomb, planted on the premises.
Many objects on premises could be used as weapons to defend yourself in such a situation. Some things as common as a fire extinguisher are perfect tools to use.
Participants were urged to take control of the situation as best as possible, until law enforcement and other agencies arrive at the scene.
A second course will be given for other volunteers who were unable to make it to the first course.
