Sifrei Torah, Burned In Shul Fire, Buried In Rockland County
by Monsey.info
Tens of community members and mispallelim gathered Sunday at the Har Shalom Cometary in Rockland County for the Kevurah of three Sifrei Torah, destroyed when a Shul in Pomona Heights went up in flames last month.
Heartrending speeches were given, and tears shed, as the Mispallelim of Chassidim 110 paid their respects and buried the three Sifrei Torah with the proper Kovod.
The Sifrei Torah were destroyed when the shul, located at 34 North Ridge Road at the intersection of North Ridge and Overlook Road, caught fire around 5:30am on April 17th. Firefighters from local stations battled the blaze for hours, initially attempting to fight the fire internally but ultimately being forced out of the building, just containing it as the Shul burned down.
While the safe containing the Sifrei Torah was ultimately retrieved, the heat and water used to battle the blaze had sadly taken its toll, leaving the three Sifrei Torah unusable and in need of burial.
The next morning the shul had already announced plans of a Haschalas Sefer Torah, beginning the writing of the new Sefer Torah on the same spot where the Shul had stood the day before.
