Thiells Mt. Ivy Road, and Hammond Road Roundabout Opens Today
The Rockland County Government proudly announced yesterday that the Suffern Lane, Thiells Mt. Ivy Road, and Hammond Road roundabout is reopen effective today.
Prior to the project these intersections had a crash rate higher than the statewide average, had curbs that were not ADA compliant, and included two uncoordinated traffic signals causing heavy traffic. Hereโs how the new roundabouts will change that:
Roundabouts reduce speeds and crashes in fact, a study by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety found that roundabouts resulted in a 39% overall reduction in crashes; a 76% reduction in injury crashes and an 89% reduction in fatal or incapacitating crashes.
You can now expect up to 70% less delay during peak hours, cutting down on your travel time, new, ADA-compliant sidewalks and safer crosswalks for schoolchildren and everyone on foot, and fewer emissions and less noise from idling cars.
Please note the temporary traffic pattern as construction continues through the winter with the eventual intersection of Thiells Mt Ivy Road to the roundabout.
All Thiells Mt Ivy Road traffic will turn right on Suffern Lane and enter the roundabout including traffic that intends to travel westbound on Letchworth Village Road towards Ridge Road
No left turns onto Thiells Mt Ivy Road from Suffern Lane. All traffic will remain westbound towards Ridge Road. Vehicles will travel Ridge Road to Thiells Mt Ivy Rd.
Right turns onto Thiells Mt Ivy Road from Letchworth Village Road are allowed.
