by Monsey.info

It sounds kind of crazy, but used cooking oil is apparently a hot commodity.

Three slick suspects were busted by the Ramapo Police department in a late night heist of the most bizarre type.

The men had been driving on route 17 in a white utility van, and were caught with hundreds of gallons of stolen used cooking oil.

The Ramapo midnight patrol initially became suspicious of the vehicle, calling the detectives who identified them as thieves who stole the oil from stores in the Village of Suffern.

The suspects were arrested and charged with the thefts in Suffern as well as possessing stolen property in Ramapo. Suffern Police Department

You might ask, why would they steal cooking oil? And truthfully, why would the restaurants care?

The answer is that used cooking oil can be processed into biodiesel, an alternative to regular diesel. Most restaurants are required to recycle or properly dispose of their used oil, and there are companies that are contracted to do that.
