E-Bike Fire Torches Barbershop In Hillcrest, Contained By Firefighters From Spreading To Neighboring Stores

Around 6:13pm Thursday evening, sirens began to wail in the area of 279 N. Main Street as firefighters rushed to a Veloz barbershop where heavy smoke was reported.

“The Hillcrest Fire Company No. 1 responded on 6/1/23 at 6:13 PM to 279 N. Main Street where a single-story commercial building had smoke coming from the front of the store,” The Hillcrest Fire Company reported. “Units arrived on scene within a minute and through careful and aggressive operations were able to extinguish the fire quickly and keep the fire damage to a single store.”

Due to the design of these types of buildings there was a very real threat of the fire spreading horizontally through the ceiling, but a quick response the firefighters stopped this from happening.

Having literally saved the neighboring stope from further damage, the firefighters removed smoke which had made its way into the adjacent stores.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Sheriffs BCI Office and Ramapo Detectives, but investigators believe that it was started by a E-Bike battery which caught fire, an issue which has been seen across the country.
