UPDATED 4:52PM: Homes Threatened as Major Fire Tears Through Rockland County

Update 4:52pm: Spring Hill Volunteer EMS has put out an all call. They are loading up multiple vehicles to respond to the fires.

Update 4:48pm: New Square Emergency Services and Rockland Chaverim have been requested to help.

Update 4:45pm: Congressman Mike Lawler – I just spoke w/ Kathryn Garcia, Director of State Operations for @GovKathyHochul — the state is sending resources to help combat the fires in Haverstraw and Clarkstown. The situation is serious, with many homes in jeopardy along the @CSX rail. Emergency services are on the scene.

A large brush fire erupted in New York’s Rockland County Friday afternoon, chewing through tree lines perilously close to homes and a railroad track as emergency crews hurried to evacuate impacted buildings.

Black smoke was visible for miles as fire rapidly consumed property off Old Haverstraw Road.

The train tracks seen running in the area (below) are freight tracks, and investigators say preliminary information indicates a train kicked up embers as it moved along, sparking the fire. Train traffic has been halted on the route.
