SCAM ALERT: Suffern Police Warn of Scam Calls
by Monsey.info
The Suffern Police Department has warned the community of the sophisticated scams that are out there targeting US citizens.
“Telephone scams are becoming more and more prevalent and sophisticated every day,” the Suffern Police Department wrote. “We want to provide some information regarding an attempted scam report we received over the weekend to make the public aware in case anyone receives a similar phone call.”
On August 13th, 2022, the PD received a report of a suspicious phone call. Officers responded to the residence and spoke with the caller. The complainant advised that they were currently on a phone call with an unidentified person claiming to be part of the Argentinian Police. The caller ID on the phone call displayed the name as NEWYORKPOLICEDEPARTMENT7, the conversation was in Spanish. The complainant stated that the unknown caller was requesting $900.00 dollars be sent via Zelle to an unknown number and if the money was not sent the complainant will be arrested. During the conversation officers heard what sounded like fake radio transmissions or squelches. Officers were able to obtain a phone number associated with the Zelle account. Upon calling the number, officers identified themselves and the call taker hung up the phone. Officers quickly determined that this was scam attempt.
“We would like to remind the public that the Suffern Police Department will not call you and ask you to send any funds by any means to clear a criminal complaint, warrant or any other police related matter,” they said. “If you ever have doubts of the validity of a phone call from a police department, hang up and contact your local police department.”
