Spring Valley Man Arraigned on Murder Charges In February Homicide

Rockland County District Attorney Thomas E. Walsh II announced today the arraignment of Warle Arias-Fernendez before the Honorable Judge Anne B. Bianchi on one count of Murder in the Second Degree, a Class A Felony on February 29, 2024.

On or about February 23, 2024, the defendant is alleged to have intentionally killed his partner, Carolyn Canela, in their apartment located in the Village of Spring Valley.

District Attorney Tom Walsh said, “As alleged, the heinous actions of the defendant in this case resulted in a death of an innocent victim. I commend the investigation by all of the law enforcement agencies involved. My Office is committed to getting justice for the victim and her loved ones.”

Following the arraignment of the defendant on February 29, 2024, he was remanded to the Rockland County Jail. The case was investigated by the Spring Valley Police Department with the assistance of the Rockland County Sheriff’s Office Bureau of Criminal Investigations, and the Rockland County District Attorney’s Office.

First Assistant District Attorney Kathleen Devlin and Senior Assistant District Attorney Emily McNiff are prosecuting the case.

It should be noted that a criminal complaint is merely an accusation, and that a defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
